Many times, when we hear the term alcoholic, we have a clear picture that comes to mind. For most of us, that means someone who has lost their family, friends, or job because of their alcohol use. In short, alcohol has taken over their life and they can no longer manage daily life. While that can be the story of some alcoholics, many people can manage their life while still abusing alcohol. That’s because some people can be a highly functioning alcoholic. So, while they don’t show the typical signs of alcoholism, there’s still plenty of signs pointing to their abuse.
Signs of a Functioning Alcoholic
Drinks, But Never Intends to Become Drunk
One of the major signs of a functioning alcoholic is that they become intoxicated quite often, but not on purpose. Sure, we all have those times where we plan to have a crazy night. Perhaps you have something to celebrate, like a wedding or a promotion. However, if you’re having those wild nights a lot, but always intend to quit drinking earlier than you do, that could be a sign. In the case of a functioning alcoholic, they often never intend to drink that much. However, once they begin drinking, it becomes too difficult to stop.
Makes Jokes About a Being an Alcoholic
While it may seem counter-productive, a functioning alcoholic may make a lot of jokes about being an alcoholic. In most cases, this is because that person feels self-conscious about their drinking habits. They may notice that they drink more than others. Or they may recognize that they are drinking far too often. In most cases, they feel self-conscious that other people may notice their drinking habits too. So, in order to make light of the subject, they joke about being an alcoholic. Whether they realize they are one or not, making a joke makes light of the situation. Therefore, it could be a way to deflect the problem or a coping mechanism for their abuse.
Drinks Anytime, Day or Night
The very thing that makes a person a functioning alcoholic is that they can drink but still function through daily life. So, while most of us cannot drink in the middle of the day and continue with out habits, a functioning alcoholic can do just that. They may begin to drink early in the day, and carry on just as normal.
In short, identifying a functioning alcoholic can be difficult because they still manage to do their daily habits. While alcohol may not be keeping them from managing their affairs, they could still be abusing it.
